Free Consultation
A free, no-pressure conversation to see if we are a good fit.
RLT was developed by Terry Real as a direct, skills-based approach to relationships. This is a plain-language guide to its core ideas and how they get used in session.
RLT treats the relationship itself as the client. The question shifts from who is right to what the two of you are actually building.
Most conflict runs on the assumption that somebody has to win. RLT starts from a different premise: that both partners are usually protecting themselves in ways that make sense individually and cause damage jointly. The practitioner does not stay neutral. They name what they see, take a position when it is needed, and hold both people to a standard while remaining firmly on the side of the relationship.
A handful of RLT concepts do most of the work. These are the ones that come up first.
Under stress most of us revert to a younger, protective version of ourselves. Noticing that shift, and choosing to respond as an adult instead, is the central skill.
Grandiosity and shame are two positions within the same system. Neither allows real contact, and most people move between them.
A standard rather than an aspiration: no contempt, no violence, no withdrawal used as punishment. It applies to both partners equally.
RLT is unusually practical. Most sessions produce something specific to try.
A structured way to raise something difficult, and to receive it without escalating.
Learning to hold a line without contempt and without collapsing.
Rupture is inevitable. Reliable repair is what separates couples who do well.
RLT is warm but demanding. It does not let either partner sit outside the work.
Both partners examine their own contribution, regardless of who did more damage.
You will be told things you may not want to hear, without hostility.
Skills get rehearsed in session and then used in real life.
Building an argument against your partner is set aside in favour of building something together.
RLT suits people who want movement rather than an ongoing forum for grievances.
Arguments stop being about who is correct.
You recover from ruptures faster and far more predictably.
Limits get held without contempt or withdrawal.
Honesty and warmth start coexisting instead of trading off.
RLT is effective, and its directness genuinely does not suit everyone.
