Fierce Compassion in Action

We identify the specific pattern you're stuck in — the loop, the trigger, the move that escalates it, the move that shuts it down. Then we practice something different, until the new move holds up under pressure. Not in theory. In your kitchen. With the actual person across from you.
The anchor of this work is Relational Life Therapy, developed by Terry Real. RLT is direct. It's accountable. It names what's actually happening in the room and assumes you're capable of doing something about it. For men who are used to being good at what they do, it tends to land differently than the work they may have tried before.
RLT is the frame. It isn't the whole toolkit.
We're formally trained in a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, because no single model fits every couple, every man, every moment. Depending on what the work actually needs, we may draw on:

-Attachment-based and emotionally focused approaches, when the work is about safety, repair, and the felt sense of being a team again
Cognitive and behavioral tools, when the work is about the specific thoughts and habits that keep the pattern running;
-Trauma-informed practice, when older injuries are loading the present moment with weight it can't carry;
- Somatic and mindfulness-based work, when the body is ahead of the conversation and needs to be brought into it;
- Practical communication and conflict skills, because the change has to show up in how you actually talk to each other on a Wednesday night

We tell you what we're doing and why. We don't hide the method behind the curtain. And we hold the work to a clear standard: are things actually different between you and the people who matter — this week, this month, in the rooms that count?
That's what fierce compassion in action means. Fierce, because we're not here to manage your discomfort or agree with whichever of you spoke last. Compassion, because the patterns you're stuck in made sense once, and the people on the other side of them deserve the version of you that's underneath. In action, because insight alone has never saved a marriage.

Capable People, Missing Relational Awareness

Most of the people who come to us are intelligent, motivated, and care deeply about the people in their lives. What they're missing isn't desire to change — it's awareness of their role in the dynamic and relational skills that were never taught.

They're stuck in patterns of conflict, shutdown, resentment, or emotional distance. They know something needs to change, but willpower alone isn't working. The same arguments keep surfacing. The distance keeps growing. And the harder they try with the tools they have, the more stuck things feel.

Strong & Connected exists to bridge that gap — to help clients develop relational ways of being that transform how they relate to the people who matter most.

Build emotional strength, take responsibility, and create real connection.

Grounded in Relational Life Therapy

Our work is grounded in Relational Life Therapy (RLT), developed by Terry Real. Rather than focusing on who is "right," RLT focuses on what actually works to restore connection, respect, and integrity in real relationships.

This approach is structured and backed by empirical data.

Emotional Regulation

Learning to stay grounded under pressure instead of reacting from old patterns of defensiveness or withdrawal. Adult-to-adult relating.

Interrupting Losing Strategies

Identifying and stopping the defensiveness, control, withdrawal, or contempt that keep relationships stuck in the same place.

Responsibility for Impact

Shifting from intention to impact. Understanding how your behaviour lands — not just what you meant by it.

Repair Through Action

Repairing relationships through changed behaviour, not just conversation. Balancing compassion with clear expectations.

Direct, Respectful & Grounded

This is not about fixing people. It's about helping them show up differently.

01

Skills-Based, Not Insight-Only

We don't just explore feelings. We teach concrete tools for communication, emotional regulation, and conflict repair that you can use in real conversations tonight.

02

Focused on Patterns, Not Pathology

Nobody here is broken. We help you see the destructive cycles — the defensiveness, criticism, shutdown — and build new ones in their place.

03

Accountability Meets Compassion

We hold space for your experience while also being honest about what needs to change. Growth happens at the intersection of support and challenge.

04

Oriented Toward Real Change

The goal isn't endless sessions. It's equipping you with the relational skills to navigate life's challenges on your own — with clarity and confidence.

Meet Koby Smutylo

I came to this work after two decades operating at the executive level — General Counsel, founder, board member, corporate development. I've sat in the chair my clients sit in. I know what it costs to keep building when the part of your life that's supposed to be the foundation is quietly eroding underneath. Relational Life Therapy gave me a model that finally matched the way I think: practical, accountable, results-oriented, and honest about what it takes to actually change. I trained in it because it worked on me first.
